Lahore: Election Commission of Pakistan proposes local government election in Punjab in the midst of December. According to the sources, a major political development has unfolded on the domestic front as the Election Commission has proposed holding local government elections in Punjab on December 14, officially sending the draft schedule to the Chief Secretary of Punjab.
According to the proposed schedule, nomination papers for the local government elections in Punjab can be filed between October 27 and October 30. Scrutiny of the papers will take place from November 2 to November 5, while appeals against the scrutiny process can be filed between November 7 and November 11. Election tribunals will settle these appeals from November 12 to November 16, and candidates will be able to withdraw their nomination papers by November 18.
Under the timeline, the final list of candidates will be displayed on November 19, electoral symbols will be allotted on November 20, and polling will be held on December 14. Returning officers are mandated to announce the official election results by December 17.
Restoring Democracy and Empowering the Grassroots
The decision by the Election Commission to propose holding local government elections in Punjab on December 14 marks a vital step toward strengthening democracy and resolving public issues at the grassroots level.
The prolonged delay in holding local body elections has historically resulted in bureaucratic stagnation and a decline in the provision of basic civic amenities to the public.
Local governments serve as the nurseries of democracy, where future leadership is nurtured and citizens’ everyday grievances are resolved right at their doorsteps.
In the past, the lack of a continuous, empowered local government system caused severe deterioration in urban and rural infrastructure, including waste management, sanitation, clean drinking water supply, and traffic regulation.
Without empowered local representatives, addressing the localized needs of common citizens remains a challenge.
As the Election Commission has proposed holding local government elections in Punjab on December 14, it is now incumbent upon all political stakeholders, the provincial administration, and election authorities to ensure this electoral exercise is conducted transparently, peacefully, and strictly on schedule.
