NEW DELHI: An Indian man allegedly killed his father after watching Bollywood film Drishyam 3, travelling nearly 2,000 kilometres from Surat to Bihar to carry out the murder, Indian media reported.
According to police, the accused, identified as Shiv Shankar, worked in Surat. After watching the film, he allegedly switched off his mobile phone and travelled to his native village in Samastipur district of Bihar.
Police said Shankar entered his house through the back door at night. He then picked up an axe kept inside the house and attacked his sleeping father, Raghuvir Sahni, killing him.
After the killing, Shankar returned to Surat. He reportedly believed that keeping his mobile phone switched off would help him avoid detection.
However, he made a crucial mistake on his way back.
Police said Shankar switched on his phone at Patori railway station and called his wife. Investigators traced the call and used the mobile location data to track him down.
Police also noted that Shankar did not attend his father’s funeral. His mobile phone location reportedly placed him at Patori railway station on the day of the murder.
The investigation eventually led police to Surat, where they arrested Shankar.
During questioning, police said, the accused confessed to the killing and claimed that he had learned the method from Drishyam 3.
Police also found that the father and son had a long-running dispute over land, which investigators believe may have provided the motive for the murder.
A case has been registered against Shankar, and further legal proceedings are underway.
