KOHIMA: Naga group raises China warning in Manipur causing worries for Modi government.
Separatist movements in India have once again drawn attention amid continuing ethnic tensions and security concerns in the northeastern state of Manipur, with a Naga civil society representative reportedly warning that the community could seek assistance from China if its security concerns are not addressed.
According to a report attributed to the BBC, Naga representatives have warned that continued insecurity could lead to calls for external support, including the raising of the Chinese flag.
The remarks come against the backdrop of prolonged ethnic violence and unrest in Manipur.
The report said special powers have been granted to security forces across most of Manipur’s 16 administrative districts because of the security situation.
Yarchuiso Kashung, president of the Naga civil society organisation Thangkul Aze Katmanau Long, reportedly alleged at a news conference that armed groups supported by elements in Myanmar had entered Manipur and carried out attacks against members of the Naga community.
Manipur has experienced severe ethnic violence in recent years, resulting in large-scale displacement and destruction of homes.
Local journalists and community representatives have also raised concerns about the presence of armed groups, criminal networks and the illegal drug trade in parts of the state.
Separatist Movements in India: A Complex Regional Challenge
Separatist movements in India have historically emerged from a combination of ethnic identity, political grievances, demands for greater autonomy, territorial disputes and perceptions of inadequate representation.
The northeastern region has witnessed several insurgencies involving different ethnic and political groups, although their objectives, levels of support and methods have varied significantly.
Manipur’s conflict is particularly complex because it involves competing territorial and political interests among several communities, rather than a single separatist agenda.
Government security measures have attempted to contain violence, while negotiations and political processes have also been used in different parts of the region.
At the same time, displacement, allegations of human-rights violations, cross-border militant activity and concerns over illegal arms and narcotics have complicated efforts to restore lasting stability.
Analysts therefore generally view the situation through multiple lenses, including security, governance, ethnic relations and regional geopolitics.
Any assessment of separatist movements in India requires careful distinction between established facts, allegations by competing groups and broader political interpretations.
