Portugal Set to Punish Cristiano Ronaldo?

LISBON: Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo could face a suspension after leaving the national team’s camp following a reported disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus over playing time.

Disciplinary proceedings have reportedly been initiated under Portuguese football regulations, with the potential suspension ranging from one to six months. The final decision will be made by the disciplinary council.

A ban lasting more than a month could rule Ronaldo out of Portugal’s upcoming Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales next month. However, ESPN reported that a shorter suspension is considered more likely.

Ronaldo has apologised to his international teammates and the Portuguese public, acknowledging that leaving the camp was a mistake.

The veteran forward said he was disappointed after the coach allegedly failed to honour a commitment, but accepted that his actions should have consequences and that the rules must apply equally to everyone.

Coach Jorge Jesus said he had read Ronaldo’s statement and was now focused on the team’s affairs.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time leading scorer, with 146 goals in 234 international appearances, according to the figures provided in the report.
