Earthquake Jolts Swat and Adjoining Areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

SWAT:  Minor earthquake jolts KP  areas in the noon today.

According to the sources, Tremors were felt in Swat and surrounding areas following a 4.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the northern region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre, the earthquake was recorded at a depth of 90 kilometres below the earth’s surface, with its epicentre traced to the seismically active Hindu Kush mountain range.

Following the shockwaves, local administration and disaster management teams mobilized swiftly across the affected districts.

Initial assessments confirmed that no loss of life or property damage was reported as a result of the 4.4 magnitude earthquake.

Local authorities urged citizens to remain cautious, as relief teams continue monitoring the situation across Swat and adjacent valleys following the 4.4 magnitude earthquake.

Note on Earthquakes and Seismic Activity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The northern regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), particularly districts like Swat, Upper and Lower Dir, Chitral, Malakand, and Abbottabad, lie in one of the world’s most seismically active zones.

Geologically, this territory situated at the junction of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates undergoes continuous subduction and stress accumulation.

The nearby Hindu Kush mountain range serves as the epicentral hub for frequent deep-focus earthquakes, regularly sending shockwaves across Pakistan, Afghanistan, and neighboring Central Asian territories.

Over the decades, KP has experienced several catastrophic earthquakes, most notably the devastating 7.6 magnitude earthquake in October 2005, which resulted in massive loss of life, widespread destruction of infrastructure, and severe landsliding.

Subsequent events, such as the 7.5 magnitude quake in 2015, underscored the ongoing vulnerability of northern Pakistan’s mountainous terrain to secondary hazards including landslides, rockfalls, and disruption of communication networks.

To mitigate these natural hazards, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) along with national agencies continuously works on updating building codes, enforcing earthquake-resistant construction practices, and enhancing early warning protocols.
