PESHAWAR: Police have obtained CCTV footage showing an armed man shooting dead two sisters aboard a rickshaw in Peshawar’s Yakatoot area, while the suspect remains unidentified, officials said.
The killings took place on Saturday night on Gul Dara Road, within the jurisdiction of Yakatoot police station. Police registered a double-murder case against unidentified suspects on their own complaint after the victims’ relatives did not approach them to pursue the case, according to police.
The victims were identified as 35-year-old Rubina, wife of Qadeem Iqbal, and her 36-year-old sister, Fatima, daughters of Khaista Khan. Both were residents of Sadda in Kurram district, police said.
Investigators contacted the women’s relatives through their mobile phones. The family reportedly told police that the sisters had brought their ailing mother to Peshawar for treatment and had also visited relatives in the Phandu area.
Police said the family had not yet claimed the bodies, which remained at a morgue. Investigators have not established a motive for the killings, and no suspect has been identified so far.
CCTV Footage Shows Armed Man Firing at Sisters
The CCTV footage shows the two women approaching the area on foot before stopping a rickshaw and boarding it. As the vehicle begins to move, an armed man runs towards it from behind and opens fire with a pistol.
The footage appears to show the attacker firing six shots at the women. Both sisters died at the scene, while the rickshaw driver got out of the vehicle amid the gunfire.
The armed man is then seen running towards the main road while holding his pistol, according to the footage.
The shooting caused panic in the neighbourhood, with residents coming out of their homes. Shopkeepers and children in the area were also left frightened by the gunfire.
Police said they had yet to determine why the sisters were targeted. Further legal proceedings would follow as investigators gathered evidence and pursued the suspect, they added.
