DUBAI: Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has reported a major security breach with an estimated impact of $6.3 billion, after hackers allegedly gained access to its systems through a compromised laptop belonging to one of its engineers and carried out unauthorized withdrawals.
According to Reuters, Binance’s preliminary investigation suggests that an attacker exploited a security weakness involving a DevOps engineer’s laptop to access an internal service container and initiate unauthorized transactions.
The incident has triggered an unprecedented response from the cryptocurrency industry, with major digital asset companies, including Tether, Circle and Ripple, freezing billions of dollars in assets linked to the breach.
Tether froze approximately $1.57 billion in assets associated with the incident, while Circle froze more than $800 million. Cryptocurrency firm Ripple also froze around $200 million, according to Reuters.
Together, these actions account for more than $2.5 billion in frozen assets, with Binance and its industry partners reporting that approximately $3 billion has been frozen or secured so far.
How did the Binance security breach happen?
Binance’s initial investigation indicates that the attack may have originated from a compromised laptop belonging to a company engineer.
The attacker allegedly used the access gained through the device to enter a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
The exchange said it had found no evidence that wallet private keys had been leaked.
The incident prompted Binance to temporarily suspend deposits and withdrawals as a precaution while its security teams investigated the breach, secured wallet infrastructure and worked to trace the affected funds.
The company is also cooperating with law enforcement agencies and blockchain intelligence firms to identify those responsible and recover the assets.
Binance promises to cover all losses
Binance has assured customers that their funds remain safe despite the scale of the security incident.
The exchange said it would cover all losses resulting from the breach through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company funds.
Binance co-founder Yi He also reassured users that they would not bear the financial consequences of the incident.
The company has promised to publish a detailed technical report once the investigation is complete and the facts have been verified.
Tether, Circle and Ripple freeze billions
The breach has triggered coordinated action across the cryptocurrency industry as companies attempt to prevent the movement of potentially stolen digital assets.
Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, froze approximately $1.57 billion linked to the incident.
Circle, which issues USDC, froze more than $800 million, while Ripple separately blocked around $200 million in associated assets.
The freezing measures are intended to prevent the movement or conversion of assets linked to the breach and support efforts to recover the funds.
However, the full amount recovered remains uncertain as investigators continue tracking the remaining assets.
Crypto markets slide after Binance incident
The security breach also sent shockwaves through cryptocurrency markets, triggering declines in major digital currencies.
Bitcoin and Ethereum each fell by more than 3% following reports of the incident, while Binance’s native digital token, BNB, dropped approximately 5%.
The market reaction reflects growing concerns about the security of cryptocurrency exchanges and the risks associated with holding digital assets on centralised trading platforms.
Analysts have warned that the incident could undermine investor confidence, particularly if questions emerge about exchange security, liquidity and the ability of platforms to protect customer holdings.
The breach has also renewed scrutiny of cybersecurity safeguards across the cryptocurrency industry, where a single compromised employee device can potentially expose critical systems to serious threats.
