ISLAMABAD: Electricity prices across Pakistan are expected to rise by Rs 2.52 per unit as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) hears a fresh tariff adjustment petition today, official documents showed.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) submitted the request under the monthly Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA) for July. If approved by NEPRA, the proposed hike will impose an additional financial burden of approximately Rs 29.5 billion ($106 million) on electricity consumers nationwide.
According to data submitted by CPPA, total power generation for July relied heavily on hydel power, which accounted for 39.81% of total output. Imported coal contributed 14.34%, local coal accounted for 10.91%, and imported Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) generated 10.78%.
The petition noted that 14.464 billion units of electricity were delivered to power distribution companies (DISCOs) in August, at a baseline production cost of Rs 8.82 per unit.
NEPRA will review the production costs and operational data during today’s hearing before deciding whether to pass the additional costs onto end-users.
The proposal comes shortly after NEPRA approved a 52-paisa per unit quarterly adjustment three weeks ago, which added an estimated Rs 12.67 billion to consumer bills, following a 75-paisa per unit nationwide hike in August.
