Fact Check: BBC Urdu’s Report on 20 Abducted Police Personnel Proven False

Fact Check: BBC Urdu’s Fake News Claim on 20 Abducted Police Personnel

QUETTA: Reports published by BBC Urdu alleged that 20 police personnel were abducted by armed men while traveling on leave from Kalat. The report later also published by the Balochistan Post, a news website run by the media cell of the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), also known Fitna al Hindustan. Security forces and the local administration, however, debunked the claim, calling it fake news and stating that no such incident occurred.

The Claim

A report attributed to BBC Urdu stated that unidentified armed men abducted 20 police personnel traveling between Kalat and Nushki. The report added that in a separate incident, an abandoned police checkpost in Killa Abdullah district was demolished.

According to the report, the personnel belonged to four districts within the Rakhshan Division—Washuk, Chagai, Kharan, and Nushki—and were undergoing training at the Kalat Police Training Centre. A senior government official was cited as saying the personnel were traveling in a private van while on leave when armed men intercepted the vehicle and took them away.

Counterclaims provided for this review indicate that local administration and security officials denied the reports, asserting that no such abductions or attacks occurred.

Fact-Check Analysis

An analysis conducted by the Burak Digital Fact Check Wing concluded that no such incident took place in the mentioned areas. The BBC report, dated October 17, 2026, stated that 20 police trainees were abducted from a passenger van in Mastung district while traveling home on leave.

However, available records do not confirm whether local administration or security forces issued an official, on-record denial regarding these specific claims. Instead, local administrative and security sources verbally informed Burak Digital that no such incident occurred.

Critics often allege that BBC coverage includes unverified or misleading reports; however, a formal determination requires conclusive evidence beyond conflicting statements.

Verdict

Security forces and local administration officials in Balochistan have refuted reports published by BBC Urdu claiming that 20 police personnel were abducted while on leave from Kalat, declaring the news false and confirming no such incident took place.
