ISLAMABAD: Public scrutiny and anti-corruption agencies are turning up the heat on veteran politician and religious leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman over billions of rupees in unexplained assets held by him and his family.
Questions regarding the transparency of his wealth escalated following a recent television interview. When journalists pressed him to produce proof of income and receipts for his family’s extensive holdings, Fazlur Rehman evaded specific financial details, attributing his livelihood to “divine intervention from Allah.” The response triggered widespread backlash and renewed demands for him to declare his assets publicly.
Critics, political analysts, and the public are now demanding full financial transparency, urging the leader to reveal the exact sources of funding for his and his sons’ vast estate. Opposition voices argue that the religious leader has set a rare historical precedent by systematically leveraging political clout to build a personal financial empire. Over the decades, Fazlur Rehman has cultivated a reputation for securing lucrative concessions from both sitting governments and opposition coalitions, allegedly directing these benefits toward his family and close associates.
At the center of the controversy is a lavish multi-kanal compound in Islamabad’s elite G-6 sector, estimated to be worth between PKR 3 billion and 4 billion. Furthermore, official records and local reports from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—specifically Dera Ismail Khan—indicate that his family exercised significant influence over local development projects and government land allocations.
Reports allege that his network purchased lands at nominal rates and resold them to state projects at vastly inflated prices, generating hundreds of millions in profit. Additional allegations suggest that extensive agricultural lands were registered under the names of employees and alleged frontmen to bypass property declaration laws.
Inquiries by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) have identified suspicious, large-scale financial transactions flowing through accounts belonging to Fazlur Rehman’s close aides. Investigators suspect that these funds were subsequently funneled into luxury real estate investments in Dubai and other international offshore markets.
Throughout his career, Fazlur Rehman has consistently negotiated federal ministries, bulletproof vehicle fleets, official residences, and extensive VIP protocols for himself, his brothers, and his sons. Because he has never owned a recorded business or industrial enterprise, public pressure continues to mount regarding the true origins of his sprawling mansions, security convoys, and elite lifestyle.
