New Zealand Opens Permanent Residency Pathways for Skilled International Professionals

WELLINGTON:  New Zealand maintains a structured framework for skilled international professionals seeking permanent residency, offering qualified applicants the opportunity to live, work, and settle in the country through the Skilled Migrant Category.

The pathway allows successful applicants to include their spouse and dependent children up to the age of 24 in their residency applications. To qualify, applicants must meet standard health and character requirements, demonstrate English language proficiency, and be aged 55 or under.

A foundational requirement for the residency visa is securing a full-time job offer—requiring a minimum of 30 hours of work per week—from an accredited New Zealand employer. Additionally, candidates must achieve the requisite six points under the Skilled Migrant Category framework based on professional skills, qualifications, and work experience.

Application Process and Financial Requirements

The application process begins with the submission of an Expression of Interest (EOI), which carries no initial filing fee. Candidates selected from the EOI pool receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) via email, giving them a four-month window to submit their comprehensive residency application.

Initial government fees for the Skilled Migrant Category resident visa start at NZ$6,450, which covers the standard application components. Applicants are required to submit supporting documentation, including academic credentials, employment and professional records, identity papers, and police and medical clearances.
