WASHINGTON — Muslim candidates have secured major victories in the United States midterm elections, with prominent Democratic incumbents Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib successfully defending their congressional seats, while newcomer Adnan Hammawi claimed a seat in New Jersey.
Historic Wins for Muslim Lawmakers in US Midterm Elections
Representing Minnesota, Rep. Ilhan Omar won re-election to maintain her seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Meanwhile, Palestinian-American lawmaker Rashida Tlaib secured victory in Michigan, winning her fifth consecutive term in Congress. Tlaib’s ongoing tenure remains a significant milestone in American politics, marking her continued historic presence as the first Palestinian-American woman elected to the U.S. legislature.
Adding to the growing representation of Muslim lawmakers in Washington, Adnan Hammawi won a seat in the House of Representatives from New Jersey.
Political Shift in Kansas Breaks 94-Year History
In a separate milestone at the state level, Democrat Adam Hamilton flipped a U.S. Senate seat in Kansas, marking the first time in 94 years that Democrats have captured the position.
Hamilton defeated longtime incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins, who had held office since first being elected in 1996. The defeat brings an end to Collins’ nearly three-decade legislative career.
