Deadly Accidents in Punjab Over the Past Decade
Over the past decade, Punjab has witnessed a concerning frequency of severe road crashes, resulting in significant loss of life and heavy strain on healthcare infrastructure.
Major highways, dual carriageways, and inter-city arteries such as the Indus Highway, GT Road, and various regional routes have repeatedly seen tragic incidents involving passenger buses, heavy freight trucks, and private vehicles.
High-density traffic, combined with mixed vehicular movement ranging from slow agricultural trailers to high-speed inter-city coaches, drastically increases collision risks across the province.
Key factors contributing to this persistent public safety issue include driver fatigue, high-speed overtaking, inadequate vehicle maintenance, overloaded freight transport, and poor visibility during extreme winter fog and smog seasons.
Furthermore, non-compliance with speed limits, lane discipline, and safety protocols on provincial roads exacerbates collision severity.
Despite administrative efforts to expand highway patrolling, establish emergency response centers like Rescue 1122, and enforce stricter licensing, systemic challenges in road infrastructure and traffic management remain.
Addressing the long-term risk of catastrophic highway collisions requires comprehensive road safety reforms.
