Tragic Wall Collapse in Malir Bakkah Pery Claims Three Lives, Including Two Children

KARACHI: Tragedy struck the Malir Bakkah Pery area of Karachi when a dilapidated government building wall collapsed, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including two young children.

According to rescue services and police reports, the second injured child succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at a local hospital, pushing the final death toll to three.

According to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malir, a public tree nursery was situated right alongside the boundary wall of the government structure.

Persistent water seepage and moisture had significantly weakened the structure over time, rendering it extremely hazardous.

During the collapse, the heavy wall buckled outward, crashing directly onto the victims who were nearby.

Local authorities and rescue teams immediately rushed to the scene to shift the injured to medical facilities, while a formal inquiry into the structural neglect has been initiated.

Deadly Accidents in Karachi in the Past Decade

Over the past decade, Karachi has witnessed a recurring series of fatal structural collapses, industrial disasters, and infrastructure failures that have claimed hundreds of lives.

Rapid, often unregulated urbanization, widespread corruption, and a severe lack of enforcement by municipal regulatory bodies—such as the Sindh Building Control Authority—have left countless residents vulnerable to crumbling housing and decaying public infrastructure.

Major disasters, including catastrophic multi-story residential collapses in areas like Lyari, Gulbahar, and Rizvia Society, have collectively cost dozens of lives, while heavy monsoon rains frequently trigger deadly wall collapses and electrocution incidents across densely populated neighborhoods.

Despite continuous public outcry and temporary suspensions of local officials following such tragedies, systemic negligence persists.

Urban planners and safety experts repeatedly stress that without rigorous structural audits, strict enforcement of building codes, and proactive maintenance of aging public properties, vulnerable communities will continue to face preventable hazards.
