ISLAMABAD: The possibility of Emergency or Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is expected to be discussed at a high-level consultative meeting scheduled for today, as the federal leadership reviews the province’s security situation and considers possible constitutional measures.
According to sources, the meeting is expected to be attended by President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and senior military leadership. Participants are expected to review detailed security reports submitted by national security institutions before deliberating on the potential course of action.
Emergency or Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Key Proposals Under Consideration
Sources indicate that several proposals are being examined, including the possibility of imposing an emergency in 12 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including districts merged with the province following the integration of the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).
The proposals reportedly also include measures that could grant the federal government additional administrative authority within the province. These options are being considered in view of the prevailing security situation and the constitutional framework governing emergency measures.
Constitutional Provisions Under Review
Officials familiar with the matter said the consultations may involve an examination of Articles 232 to 234 of the Constitution of Pakistan, which address emergency-related provisions and certain constitutional powers concerning provincial governance.
The meeting is expected to assess the available options before any final decision is taken. Sources suggest that a policy direction could emerge from the deliberations, although the nature and scope of any potential measures remain subject to official decisions and constitutional requirements.
