MUMBAI: Renowned Bollywood filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan has expressed serious concerns over the changing dynamics of the film industry, stating that the era of traditional Bollywood superstars is drawing to a close.
Era of Bollywood Superstars Nearing Its End? Unprofessional Conduct on Film Sets Raises Questions
In recent media interactions, Farah Khan criticized the working attitude and lack of confidence among the younger generation of actors. She noted that cinematic legends such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, and Akshay Kumar represent the final generation of true superstars, warning that the golden era of undisputed stardom may not continue after them.
Highlighting the unprofessional conduct often witnessed on film sets, Khan revealed that contemporary actors frequently interfere in areas beyond their domain, including direction, choreography, music composition, and casting, often arriving on set without memorizing their lines. By contrast, she praised veteran actors for their unwavering professionalism and absolute trust in a director’s vision.
Citing specific instances, she recalled that superstar Shah Rukh Khan placed complete confidence in her casting choices—such as selecting Sushmita Sen for Main Hoon Na and introducing newcomer Deepika Padukone in Om Shanti Om—without raising questions. Furthermore, she commended actors like Salman Khan for their relentless work ethic, noting that senior stars maintain the same dedication as they did in their debut films and have never refused Sunday shoots or requested unnecessary breaks.
Khan further remarked that today’s emerging actors frequently demand last-minute script changes while shifting their primary focus toward magazine covers and awards ceremonies, often lacking significant commercial or artistic hits to their credit.
