Government Decides to Procure 18 LNG Cargoes Amid Fears of Gas Shortage in Winter

Government Decides to Procure 18 LNG Cargoes

ISLAMABAD: The Government Decides to Procure 18 LNG Cargoes to meet rising energy demand during the upcoming winter season, with imports planned from November to February. The move aims to ensure an adequate supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as heating and power generation needs increase during the colder months.

Government Decides to Procure 18 LNG Cargoes

According to sources, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was recently briefed on the projected gas supply and demand dynamics during the winter months. The review highlighted that total domestic gas availability across the country is expected to remain around 1.4 billion cubic feet, while demand in Punjab alone is projected to reach approximately 1 billion cubic feet.

Officials warned that indigenous gas reserves may prove insufficient even to meet the demands of domestic consumers during peak winter months. Consequently, the government has finalized plans to procure 18 imported LNG cargoes to bridge the shortfall and ensure a continuous energy supply from November through February.

Under the finalized strategy, priority will be given to sourcing lower-priced LNG from Qatar. However, if the supply from Qatar cannot be initiated in time, authorities will resort to purchasing cargoes from the spot market to fulfill immediate requirements.

Energy experts view the decision as a crucial preemptive step to counter the widening gap between local gas supply and seasonal demand, ensuring adequate energy distribution during the four core winter months.
