Note on ICC Criteria for Rankings Across All Formats

The International Cricket Council (ICC) utilizes a sophisticated, fully automated mathematical algorithm to determine player ratings across Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I) formats.

Operating on a 0-to-1000 scale without subjective human intervention, the system acts as a moving average that assesses a player’s recent form while considering their entire career trajectory.

Key criteria evaluated across formats include:

  • Quality of Opposition: Scoring runs or taking wickets against higher-rated players and teams earns significantly more rating points than performances against weaker opposition.
  • Match Context & Result: Bonus points are awarded to players whose individual performances contribute directly to team victories, with greater bonuses granted for winning against top-ranked opposition.
  • Format-Specific Modifiers:
    • Test Cricket: Focuses heavily on total runs, wickets, and heavy bowling workloads.
    • ODIs & T20Is: Emphasizes strike rate for batters and economy rate for bowlers alongside wickets and runs scored.
