ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called an important meeting of the parliamentary parties of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and its coalition partners to discuss emergency measures and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to the supplied report.
The meeting was scheduled for 4pm in Committee Room No. 2 at Parliament House, with the prime minister chairing proceedings. Government and allied lawmakers were expected to receive briefings on the country’s political and security situation, alongside consultations on the coalition’s parliamentary strategy.
According to sources cited in the report, Shehbaz was expected to explain the background and reasons behind the government’s decisions concerning Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The discussions were also expected to cover security conditions in the province, counterterrorism policy and the federal government’s next steps. The meeting’s stated purpose was to take coalition lawmakers into confidence and consult them on how the government should proceed in Parliament.
The report said the federal government announced emergency measures and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on October 11, following growing differences with the provincial administration over security policy, counterterrorism operations and political matters.
The federal government described the intervention as necessary to improve law and order and strengthen coordination against terrorism.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf rejected the measures, arguing that they undermined provincial autonomy and the public mandate. These opposing positions form the political backdrop to the coalition consultations, with the government defending its security rationale and PTI challenging the intervention.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was expected to brief participants on security conditions across Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Coalition to Discuss Parliamentary Strategy
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry was also expected to brief lawmakers on the parliamentary agenda and legislative matters.
