PANAJI: Goa Police have registered an unnatural-death (UD) case following the death of veteran Bollywood actor Nana Patekar, with an inquiry underway to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to Indian media reports, Panaji Police registered the case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which provides for police inquiries into certain deaths. The investigation is being led by Police Sub-Inspector Nitin Naik.
Patekar, 75, died on Thursday morning, October 8, at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa, after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest.
Police records cited in media reports state that the National Film Award-winning actor was brought from his residence to the casualty ward of Manipal Hospital in Bambolim, where he was declared dead.
The inquiry is ongoing, and authorities are examining the circumstances of his death. The registration of an unnatural-death case is a legal procedure and does not, by itself, establish that a crime occurred.
Why Did Police Register an Unnatural-Death Case?
Police registered the case after receiving information from the hospital that Patekar had been brought in dead from his residence.
Such cases may be registered to allow authorities to conduct an inquest and establish the circumstances and medical cause of death, particularly when a person dies suddenly at home and is brought to hospital without signs of life.

The investigation is being conducted as part of that procedure. Further findings, including relevant medical reports, will help establish the circumstances surrounding the actor’s death.
Patekar’s last rites were performed at his farmhouse in Donje, near Pune, on Thursday night, according to media reports.
