Djibouti: Tragedy off the Coast of Africa as Migrant Boat Capsizes Claiming 139 Lives

A devastating maritime tragedy occurred off the coast of East Africa when a migrant boat capsizes claiming 139 lives, including 15 children.

According to international media reports, the vessel carrying approximately 300 individuals overturned during the night between October 8 and October 9 off the coast of Djibouti as it navigated towards Yemen.

Search and rescue operations managed to rescue over 60 passengers, all of whom were identified as Ethiopian nationals, while more than 80 people remain missing.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that among the recovered bodies, at least 42 were women.

Every year, thousands of migrants from the Horn of Africa—including Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, and Djibouti—undertake this perilous sea crossing across the Gulf of Aden in search of safety, employment, and better economic prospects in Gulf nations.

Authorities and rescue teams continue recovery efforts as fears grow that the final casualty count could rise further after this migrant boat capsizes claiming 139 lives.

Note on Deadly Sea Incidents

The recurring maritime disasters along global migration corridors represent a severe humanitarian crisis driven by economic hardship, conflict, and a lack of legal passage.

Overcrowded vessels operated by human smugglers regularly traverse dangerous stretches of water, such as the Eastern Route connecting the Horn of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula, as well as the treacherous Central Mediterranean and English Channel routes.

Unseaworthy vessels, severe weather conditions, absence of safety equipment, and severe overcrowding drastically elevate the risk of catastrophic shipwrecks.

According to global migration monitoring agencies, thousands of asylum seekers and migrants lose their lives at sea every year.

Smugglers frequently exploit vulnerable individuals fleeing war, poverty, or political instability, subjecting them to life-threatening conditions aboard unmaintained boats. When a migrant boat capsizes claiming 139 lives, it underscores the desperate conditions driving individuals to risk everything on perilous journeys.

Addressing the rising frequency of deadly sea incidents requires comprehensive international action.

Humanitarian organizations urge world leaders and regional governments to dismantle illegal smuggling networks while expanding safe, regulated, and legal migration pathways.

Without systemic policy interventions, search-and-rescue support, and coordinated border governance, desperate travelers will continue to face extreme risk, turning international sea corridors into lethal migration routes.
