Trump’s Foreign Policy Raises Living Costs, Threatens Republican Midterm Prospects

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump’s foreign policy is emerging as a potential political liability for Republicans ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, as the war with Iran and sweeping tariff measures contribute to rising costs for American households. With voters increasingly concerned about fuel prices, grocery bills, and the cost of living, the economic consequences of the administration’s international decisions could threaten Republican control of Congress.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted earlier this month found that approximately 78 per cent of Americans blamed Trump’s policies for rising prices that were outpacing their earnings. The findings suggest that foreign policy, traditionally a secondary concern in midterm elections, has become increasingly relevant to voters’ economic decisions.

Trump’s Foreign Policy Links Iran War and Tariffs to Rising Costs

Trump’s military campaign against Iran and his tariff policies have intensified concerns over energy prices, trade, and household expenses. Analysts say these economic pressures could influence voters as they assess the president’s performance and the Republican Party’s legislative agenda.

The political impact has prompted Trump to pursue measures aimed at easing fuel costs, including lifting sanctions on Russian diesel exports. Critics, including some Republicans, have questioned the decision, while the administration has defended its broader economic approach.

Trump has also urged Ukraine to halt strikes on Russian refineries and pledged not to launch further attacks on Iran before the midterms, according to the report. Meanwhile, concerns remain over the possibility of renewed military escalation in the Middle East after the elections.

Iran’s actions around the Strait of Hormuz have added to uncertainty in global energy markets, further complicating efforts to stabilise oil prices.

Republicans Face Uncertainty Over Control of Congress

Public opinion surveys indicate widespread opposition to the Iran war and growing dissatisfaction with aspects of Trump’s international approach. The Chicago Council on Global Affairs has also reported that many Americans believe the administration’s foreign policy has harmed the country’s global standing and economic conditions.

Democrats are widely expected to compete strongly for control of the House of Representatives, while the Senate has also become a key battleground. Losing either chamber could complicate Trump’s legislative agenda during the final two years of his second term.

However, even if Democrats gain congressional control, lawmakers may face significant limitations in restricting the president’s authority over foreign policy.

The November 3 elections will provide a crucial measure of voter sentiment toward Trump’s economic and international policies, with the outcome potentially shaping the direction of his administration during the remainder of his term.
