DHAKA: Bangladesh’s former air force chief, Air Chief Marshal (retd) Sheikh Abdul Hannan, has been arrested in Qatar in connection with corruption and money laundering allegations, opening a new chapter in an investigation into his assets and financial transactions.
Qatari authorities detained Hannan on October 15, Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) confirmed.
The commission said it received official notification through Interpol on October 18, following earlier informal information about his arrest.
ACC Secretary Md Saidur Rahman Khan told reporters that confirmation reached the commission through the National Central Bureau of Bangladesh Police.
He said the relevant authorities had sought information from the ACC and that the commission was preparing the necessary material to support efforts to bring Hannan back to Bangladesh.
The announcement confirmed his detention abroad, although the reports reviewed did not provide a timetable for his return or details of proceedings before Qatari authorities.
According to the ACC, Hannan allegedly acquired assets worth approximately Tk3.28 crore beyond his known sources of income.
The commission registered a case at its Dhaka-1 office on July 27, 2025, following verification of the allegations.
Financial figures differ across published accounts. Bangladesh’s state news agency BSS, citing the ACC secretary, reported suspicious transactions of approximately Tk14.08 crore.
The available reporting does not establish whether these amounts concern different periods, separate findings or overlapping transactions. They should therefore be presented with their respective attribution rather than treated as an identical figure.
The investigation also extends beyond Bangladesh. The Business Standard reported that the ACC had requested information from financial intelligence and police authorities concerning Hannan’s assets in Qatar, Canada and other countries.
Those requests were sent during May and June 2026 as investigators pursued information about alleged overseas wealth and possible money laundering.
Separate media reports have also described allegations involving his wife, including assets allegedly exceeding her known income and suspicious banking activity. These remain accusations requiring examination through the legal process.
Legal Proceedings Will Determine Responsibility
Hannan’s arrest represents a procedural development in the investigation; it does not establish guilt.

Any determination of criminal responsibility will depend on evidence presented and assessed through the applicable judicial proceedings. Further official updates are awaited on arrangements for his return and the subsequent handling of the case.
