Governor’s Rule or Emergency: PM Shehbaz Seeks Stakeholders’ Nod Before Final Decision on KP

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided to take all stakeholders into confidence before making any final decision on the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to sources.

The decision came during a high-level meeting chaired by the prime minister to review the security and political situation in the province.

Sources said the meeting was told that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had failed to maintain law and order in the province.

Shehbaz expressed concern over the worsening security situation in KP, the sources said.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi briefed the meeting on terrorism and the overall security situation in the province.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar briefed participants on the constitutional and legal aspects of possible measures concerning KP.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Naqvi, Kashmir Affairs Minister Amir Muqam, Tarar and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar attended the meeting.

The meeting also reviewed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s planned long march on Islamabad and reported backchannel contacts with the party leadership, according to sources.

The federal government and the PTI-led KP administration have faced growing tensions over security, governance and the planned protest.

Various constitutional and legal options, including emergency measures and governor’s rule, have been under discussion. However, no final decision to impose either measure has been announced.

The government has also been consulting political allies and other stakeholders on the issue. Prime Minister Shehbaz is expected to hold further consultations before deciding on the next steps for the province.
