A Comprehensive Look at the Tanushree Dutta and Nana Patekar Scandal

‘The Devil Is Dead’: Tanushree Dutta Reacts to Nana Patekar’s Death

MUMBAI: The matter of alleged allegations from Tanushree on Nana Patekar has come to limelight once again.

According to the reports, the public accusation made by former Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta against veteran actor Nana Patekar in 2018 became the catalyst that ignited India’s #MeToo movement.

This watershed moment forced the entertainment industry to confront long-standing issues of workplace misconduct, gender power dynamics, and accountability.

The controversy originated from an incident on the sets of the film Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss in March 2008.

Dutta abruptly walked out of the project, alleging unprofessional and intimidating behavior by Patekar during the shooting of a special song sequence.

Although she spoke about it vaguely at the time, the issue resurfaced nationally in September 2018 when Dutta revisited her experience in media interviews, prompting widespread public debate on workplace harassment in the Indian film industry.

Tanushree Dutta alleged that during the 2008 shoot, Nana Patekar behaved inappropriately and sexually harassed her by insisting on incorporating intimate and lewd choreography additions that were not part of the agreed-upon contract.

She claimed that when she rejected his advances and requested boundaries, Patekar called in members of political-linked fringe groups who allegedly vandalized her car and intimidated her as she tried to leave the set.

To substantiate her claims, Dutta pointed to circumstantial accounts from contemporary witnesses, including a few crew members and a journalist present on set in 2008 who corroborated aspects of the chaotic environment and the attack on her vehicle.

However, concrete forensic or direct documentary evidence proving physical misconduct from a decade prior was scarce, relying heavily on testimonial accounts.

Nana Patekar vehemently denied all allegations, calling them fabricated, baseless, and malicious.

Patekar maintained that he was a senior, respected actor who had treated her professionally, noting that he was even practicing a dance step that included multiple other background artists rather than isolating her.

His legal team issued formal notices demanding an apology for defamation.

The legal proceedings concluded in March 2025, when a Mumbai magistrate court dismissed Dutta’s petition and upheld a police closure report.

The judiciary did not rule on the factual merits or truth of the 2008 events; rather, the case was dismissed on technical grounds due to an unjustified delay and the expiration of the legal limitation period alongside insufficient formal evidence linking to the 2018 complaint.
