ISLAMABAD: The Federal Court has turned down Benazir University’s appeal against a woman lecturer.
According to the details, In a significant judicial ruling, the Federal Constitutional Court dismisses appeal against female teacher by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, confirming the lower court’s decision in favor of educator Syeda Laila.
Presiding over the case, Acting Chief Justice of the Federal Constitutional Court, Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi, remarked that the teacher had fulfilled her three-year service obligation at the institution after completing her PhD, yet the university continued to harass her.
Counsel for the university argued that she was awarded a government scholarship worth Rs 5.6 million subject to a three-year service agreement, during which she was absent for 196 days.
Addressing these claims, Justice Rizvi questioned how the administration could retroactively challenge leave applications that the university itself had officially approved.
He expressed sharp criticism over institutional management, noting that after spending government funds to finance her doctoral studies, the university hired an external candidate for the Assistant Professor position instead of promoting her, forcing her resignation.
Reaffirming the judgment in her favor, the Federal Constitutional Court dismisses appeal against female teacher by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University.
on Nepotism in Appointments in Universities
Nepotism and political interference in university appointments pose a critical threat to the integrity of Pakistan’s higher education system.
Public sector universities frequently face allegations of bypassing meritocratic hiring standards, Higher Education Commission (HEC) guidelines, and open selection processes to favor preferred individuals.
A particularly damaging outcome of nepotism in academic appointments is the systematic neglect of foreign-trained scholars and PhD graduates bonded under state-funded scholarships.
Despite substantial public investment in their advanced education, returning scholars are routinely overlooked during faculty recruitment for senior academic roles.
Instead, permanent faculty positions and administrative offices are often awarded based on personal affiliations, political patronage, or internal lobbying.
