The ‘Big Show’ Bows Out: Australia’s Glenn Maxwell Announces Retirement
Affectionately known as “The Big Show”, the 38-year-old made the formal announcement, concluding an era defined by unorthodox stroke-play, match-winning heroics, and crucial spin-bowling contributions across all formats.
An Illustrious Career Across Formats
Having debuted in international cricket in 2012, Maxwell established himself as one of the most feared white-ball exponents in the global game. Over his extensive career, he represented Australia in 286 matches across Tests, One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), accumulating 7,226 runs and claiming 136 wickets.
Glenn Maxwell played a key role in Australia’s successful cricketing era, winning the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup titles in 2015 and 2023, as well as contributing to the team’s 2021 ICC T20 World Cup triumph. One of the most memorable moments of his career was his remarkable unbeaten 201-run innings against Afghanistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup, which he scored despite suffering from severe cramps. Having retired from ODI cricket, Maxwell concluded his 50-over career with 3,990 runs and 77 wickets in 149 matches. In T20 internationals, he scored 2,897 runs and took 51 wickets in 130 matches, including five centuries. He also represented Australia in seven Test matches, scoring a century against India in 2017.
Focus on Franchise T20 Leagues
Reflecting on his decision, Maxwell admitted feeling emotional when addressing his teammates, noting that the physical demands of managing a packed international schedule prompted him to step away to prolong his career.
