SWAT: Earthquake of 5.5 magnitude hits Swat and Surrounding areas in KPK .
According to the details, A 4.5 magnitude earthquake shakes Swat and surrounding areas in the early hours of Thursday, spreading fear and panic among the residents of the valley and adjacent districts.
According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) in Islamabad, the 4.5 magnitude earthquake shakes Swat and surrounding areas was felt with significant intensity, causing people to rush out of their homes, reciting verses from the Holy Quran.
Tremors were reported in Mingora, Barikot, Kabal, and other parts of the district.
The NSMC recorded the depth of the quake at 231 kilometers underground, with the epicenter located in the bordering region of the Hindu Kush range in Afghanistan.
No reports of casualties or infrastructure damages were received from any part of Swat immediately after the event.
Residents described the experience as frightening.
The NSMC confirmed that while the 4.5 magnitude earthquake shakes Swat and surrounding areas, its deep focus in the Hindu Kush region meant the intensity felt on the surface was comparatively less severe than a shallower quake of the same magnitude, which is a common occurrence in this seismically active region.
As a result, the deep focus of the earthquake might have prevented significant destruction.
Seismic Activity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, including Swat and its adjoining areas, lies on a highly active seismic zone where the Indian tectonic plate is continuously colliding with the Eurasian plate.
This geological setup makes the region particularly vulnerable to frequent earthquakes.
Historically, the province has witnessed devastating seismic events, most notably the 7.6 magnitude earthquake on October 8, 2005, which claimed thousands of lives and caused widespread destruction.
The province’s complex fault lines, especially the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) and the Indus-Tsangpo Suture Zone, contribute to its seismic instability.
The frequency of tremors in KP varies, with some years experiencing multiple earthquakes of varying magnitudes. Most of these earthquakes are relatively minor and go unnoticed, but occasionally, stronger tremors pose a significant threat.
Factors such as a lack of strictly enforced building codes, especially in rural areas, can exacerbate the vulnerability of infrastructure and increase the risk of casualties.
Given its high vulnerability, seismic monitoring and public awareness are crucial for the region.
Organizations like the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) constantly monitor seismic activity, providing real-time data to government agencies.
Efforts to improve earthquake resistant construction and enhance disaster preparedness are ongoing but face challenges related to resource constraints and public awareness.
Despite these challenges, continuous monitoring and mitigation efforts remain essential to safeguard the lives and properties of the people in KP.

Government authorities in Swat have directed relevant departments to remain on alert in case of any further seismic activity, reaffirming that the 4.5 magnitude earthquake shakes Swat and surrounding areas, including its epicentral area in the Hindu Kush, had no reported damages.
