4 Banned Network Terrorists Arrested in Karachi Joint Intelligence Operation

KARACHI: In a major joint intelligence-based operation, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Sindh and a federal intelligence agency successfully foiled planned attacks by apprehending 4 banned network terrorists arrested in Karachi belonging to proscribed outfits.

According to a CTD spokesperson, three of the arrested suspects are trained operatives of the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), while the fourth is an active operative of the Sindhudesh Revolutionary Army (SRA).

Raid at Abul Hasan Isphahani Road

Actively acting on verified intelligence regarding trained BLA operatives gathered under organizational directives, joint teams executed a raid near Abul Hasan Isphahani Road, Block 4.

The three BLA suspects identified as Ghulam Yaseen, Aftab Ahmed, and Shoaib were apprehended at a public park while preparing to launch terror attacks.

Initial investigations revealed that the suspects were in direct contact with their handler, planning hand-grenade attacks targeting sensitive installations and law enforcement agencies across the city.

The group was previously involved in target killings as well as attacks on Frontier Corps (FC) and Customs vehicles in Balochistan. Security forces recovered three hand grenades, a .30-bore pistol, and ammunition from their possession.

SRA Operative Apprehended Near Korangi Causeway

In a second raid near the Korangi Causeway, security forces apprehended Asif Ali (alias Asif Sindhi), an operative linked with the banned SRA.

Authorities seized a hand grenade from his custody.

During initial questioning, the suspect disclosed that he had conducted reconnaissance (recon) on a foreign national, a Police DSP, railway tracks, and the residence of a key political figure under organizational directives.

He was actively planning sabotage operations targeting law enforcement personnel and critical urban infrastructure in the metropolis.

Note on Militant Groups Operating in Larger Pakistani Cities

Urban hubs across Pakistan—particularly mega-cities like Karachi—face complex, multi-layered security challenges posed by violent extremist networks.

Ethnic separatist outfits such as the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and the Sindhudesh Revolutionary Army (SRA), alongside religious extremist factions, frequently target urban centers to maximize media exposure and impact national economic stability.

Urban anonymity, dense populations, and complex logistical networks offer facilitating environments for sleeper cells to conduct reconnaissance, move weapons, and coordinate sabotage against law enforcement agencies, foreign nationals, and critical infrastructure.

In response, Pakistani intelligence agencies and provincial Counter Terrorism Departments (CTD) have intensified joint intelligence-led operations to disrupt these transnational and domestic networks, cutting off funding lines and preempting urban target operations before execution.
