The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Karachi Zone apprehended the suspect, identified as Shoaib Nawaz Afridi, for allegedly luring a victim under the pretense of marriage and exploiting her explicit photographs and videos to extortionately blackmail her.

According to the official statement issued by the NCCIA, the investigation began after the victim lodged a complaint detailing how she had initially rented a vehicle from the suspect.

During their interactions, Shoaib Nawaz Afridi gained her trust, established a personal relationship with a promise of marriage, and clandestinely recorded her private photos and media.

He subsequently used these sensitive materials to relentlessly threaten and intimidate her.

Preliminary findings reveal a calculated modus operandi where the suspect utilized his vehicle rental service as a cover to target women, gain their confidence, and create compromising recorded content for blackmail.

Further investigation is currently underway as authorities probe deeper into his network and potential additional victims.

A Note on Harassment Cases in Pakistan

Harassment cases in Pakistan have seen a concerning rise, particularly with the rapid expansion of digital platforms and mobile connectivity.

Women often face multi-dimensional harassment, ranging from workplace intimidation and public safety hazards to severe cyber-harassment, including cyberstalking, non-consensual media sharing, and extortion.

Despite legislative measures such as the Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act and the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), social stigma, fear of retaliation, and procedural hurdles frequently deter victims from reporting incidents.

The proliferation of digital crimes highlights the urgent need for robust law enforcement mechanisms, specialized investigative bodies like the NCCIA, and widespread public awareness to ensure swift justice and legal protection for victims.
