LOWER SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: The security forces targeted Afghan border positions on Sunday after what district authorities described as unprovoked firing on Pakistani checkpoints, indicating an another escalation following several clashes along the frontier during the past week.
The deputy commissioner of Lower South Waziristan said in a statement posted on the district administration’s official X account that firing from Afghan border posts was continuing.
As per the DC, the forces targeted Afghan border posts, mortar positions and defensive checkpoints during the exchange.
The statement claimed that Afghan Taliban personnel abandoned their positions following Pakistan’s response.
It did not provide details about casualties on the Afghan side or specify how many posts had been affected.
No casualties had been reported from Pakistani border areas at the time of the statement, the deputy commissioner added.
He said that forces remained prepared to respond to further aggression.
The ISPR had not commented on the latest development when the original report was published.
The district administration’s account therefore remained the principal official description of Sunday’s exchange.
The latest firing followed Friday’s confrontation, when Pakistani forces responded to attacks from across the border, according to state media reports citing security sources.
Those reports said several Afghan Taliban posts near South Waziristan and Parachinar were destroyed during the response.
Earlier, firing in the Angoor Adda border area on Tuesday killed one local resident and injured five members of a family, according to the supplied report.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi condemned that incident, saying Pakistan would not tolerate attacks on its citizens or violations of its sovereignty.
Pakistan also rejected an Afghan defence ministry statement that accused Islamabad of initiating the confrontation. The conflicting accounts highlighted continuing disagreement between the two sides over responsibility for the violence.
Washington Signals Willingness to Help
The renewed clashes came as United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that Washington had heard Pakistan’s concerns about terrorism originating from Afghanistan.
