LAHORE: Pakistan’s national hockey team will participate in the upcoming Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, scheduled to take place in November, after accepting an invitation to compete in the prestigious international tournament.
Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) President Mohyuddin Wani confirmed Pakistan’s participation, highlighting the importance of international competitions in improving the national team’s performance and providing players with valuable exposure.
He said the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup would offer Pakistan’s hockey players an important opportunity to compete against international teams, gain experience, and strengthen their skills ahead of future assignments.
Wani emphasised that regular participation in international tournaments was essential for the development of Pakistani hockey. Playing against quality opponents would help the team evaluate its strengths, identify areas requiring improvement, and enhance its competitiveness at the international level.
Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and Sultan of Johor Cup to Boost International Exposure
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Under-21 hockey team is already in Malaysia to participate in the Sultan of Johor Cup. The tournament is expected to provide young players with valuable international experience and an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities against foreign teams.
Wani noted that participation in both competitions would help assess the potential of emerging players and contribute to the long-term development of Pakistan hockey.
The PHF’s decision to accept the invitation reflects its efforts to provide national and junior players with more opportunities to compete internationally and improve Pakistan’s standing in the sport.
