Note on Deadly Road Accidents in Azad Jammu and Kashmir

The alarming frequency of fatal traffic accidents across Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) highlights severe public safety challenges unique to mountainous terrains.

High-altitude geography, narrow unpaved roads, sharp turns, and steep cliffs make driving in AJK inherently hazardous.

Overloading passenger vehicles and transporting heavy goods on ill-suited rural jeeps significantly heighten the risk of mechanical failures, brake malfunctions, and loss of vehicle control along treacherous routes.

In addition to challenging terrain, infrastructure deficits severely compound road safety risks across the region. Many remote rural link roads lack critical safety barriers, protective guardrails, warning signage, and adequate street lighting.

Vehicle fitness regulations and strict enforcement of passenger limits often remain neglected in far-flung valleys where public transport options are extremely scarce, forcing locals to travel in overcrowded vehicles under dangerous conditions.

Furthermore, the absence of fully equipped trauma centers and rapid rescue services in distant mountain regions often delays life-saving emergency medical assistance during the critical post-accident hour.

Addressing the crisis of deadly accidents in Azad Jammu and Kashmir requires urgent intervention from provincial transit authorities and government departments.

Essential remedies include widening critical mountain corridors, installing steel crash barriers along deep ravines, enforcing mandatory vehicle inspections, and banning the commercial overloading of non-standard vehicles.
