Government Decides to Invite Opposition for Talks to Ensure Transparent Elections

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to extend an invitation to opposition for dialogue to ensure transparent election.

According to the details,   in a major move aimed at achieving political stability and restoring public confidence, the government has decided to extend a formal invitation to the opposition for dialogue to ensure transparent elections in the country.

According to official sources, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the initiative to accelerate the electoral reform process and directed the inclusion of opposition members in the special parliamentary committee.

The proposed 20-member parliamentary committee will include five members from the opposition, creating a cross-party platform to draft comprehensive legal and administrative reforms needed to ensure transparent elections.

To formalize the invitation, the Speaker of the National Assembly will soon send a letter to the opposition leadership requesting the names of their five designated representatives.

Government officials emphasized that collaborative efforts between all political stakeholders are essential to build a consensus framework and ensure transparent elections moving forward.

Questions Surrounding Transparency in the 2018 and 2024 General Elections

Electoral integrity and institutional neutrality have long been central concerns in Pakistan’s political landscape.

Both the 2018 and February 2024 general elections faced significant scrutiny from political parties, civil society, and international observers regarding the fairness and accuracy of the results.

In 2018, the sudden breakdown of the Result Transmission System (RTS) raised widespread doubts across the political spectrum.

During the 2024 elections, the nationwide shutdown of mobile internet services on polling day and severe discrepancies between Form-45 polling station counts and Form-47 consolidated constituency results severely damaged public trust.

Allegations of pre-poll manipulation were prominent in both elections, with opposition parties alleging uneven playing fields, the arbitrary rejection of nomination papers, restricted campaign activities, and political arrests.

Furthermore, inordinate delays by the Election Commission of Pakistan in announcing final consolidated results eroded confidence in the independence of the election administration.
