ISLAMABAD: Government approves wheat support price for 2027.
Accordin to the sources, PM approves proposed wheat support price of Rs 4500 per maund for 2027 as Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif announced a key decision aimed at promoting the agricultural sector, protecting farmers’ economic interests, and boosting local production for the upcoming season.
The measure is designed to provide immediate relief to wheat growers facing escalating input costs, rising petroleum prices, and general inflationary pressures.
The policy decision was reached following extensive high-level consultations involving President Asif Ali Zardari, PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, and Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended special gratitude to both Chief Ministers for their valuable input and cooperation throughout the consultative process.
He emphasized that encouraging farmers to expand cultivated area and maximize yield is vital, particularly after Pakistan had to import wheat over the past two years to meet national requirements.
It is noted that the rate of Rs 4,500 per maund serves as a proposed or indicative support price, subject to final procedures and formal regulatory notifications.
Government officials expect the initiative to significantly enhance food security, improve farmer prosperity, and make the country self-reliant in grain production by 2027.
A Note on Wheat Purchase Prices Since 2020
The official procurement price for wheat in Pakistan has experienced significant upward adjustments over the past few years, reflecting rapid inflation, currency devaluation, and rising costs of essential agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, seeds, and fuel.
In 2020, the federal government set the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat at Rs 1,400 per 40 kg (maund). Recognizing the increasing cost burden on farmers, the support price was raised to Rs 1,800 per maund in 2021.
The upward trend continued into 2022, when procurement prices reached Rs 2,200 per maund across major grain-producing provinces.
By 2023 and 2024, severe domestic economic challenges, global supply chain disruptions, and provincial price discrepancies led authorities to increase the target rate to Rs 3,900–4,000 per maund in order to ensure fair compensation for local growers and curb smuggling.
